Frequently Asked Questions

What is your treatment philosophy?

Our philosophy stems from the fact we know addiction is a disease that affects both brain and behavior. The definition of addiction has changed through research and scientific advances. Today addiction is defined by the National Institute on Drug Abuse as a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences. It is considered a brain disease because drugs change the brain: they change the structure and how the brain works. These changes in the brain can be long lasting and lead to destructive behaviors seen in people who abuse drugs. Over the years many variations of treatment techniques and optimum lengths of stay have been implemented in attempts to change the often times antisocial behaviors associated with abusive drinking and or drugging. Few have worked. Relapse has always been an accepted as “the nature of the beast”. This no longer needs to be true. There is hope!

Do you work with a 12-step model?

Rockland Treatment Center incorporates and combines several successful facets of substance abuse treatments, including comprehensive psychological evaluations to ensure an accurate and thorough diagnosis, cognitive-behavioral techniques, Neurofeedback interventions, group based therapy, individual therapy, interactive journaling, nutritional counseling and 12 step program based principles. The current treatment program for addiction is based on a combination of the aforementioned techniques, conducted in a state of the art treatment center. The premises of the program are that substance abusers are capable of change, behavior results from conscious choice and that thinking and skill development are integral for more effective ways to live one’s life. Rockland Treatment Center is designed to treat both the substance abuse problem and the underlying issues that contribute to the problem as a whole.

How do you deal with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)?

PTSD is addressed from both a clinical and a medical standpoint. We offer Rapid Resolution Therapy, which is an evidence-based therapeutic technique that eliminates the negative emotional or behavioral influence of traumatic events. We also utilize the Seeking Safety curriculum in our group and individual therapy sessions, which is another evidence-based therapeutic tool that addresses trauma and substance abuse issues concurrently. Sometimes, our medical staff will prescribe medication to alleviate certain symptoms of PTSD such as nightmares and sleep disturbance.
